Celebrating women in tech through the Bett Asia EdTech 10 list
The Bett Asia EdTech 10 list is making a grand return for 2024! As we dive into the nominations for this year’s list, we caught up with previous winner, Sarinah Ziziumiza to explore the significance of empowering women in tech throughout Southeast Asia. As the Head of the Centre of Technology Enhancement Learning at the Institute of Brunei Technical Education, Sarinah’s journey reflects her commitment to drive change, empower learners and advance immersive technologies - making her a perfect winner for the EdTech 10 list!
"In my experience as an educational technologist, I have seen firsthand how diversity in perspectives can lead to innovative solutions and advancements. Women bring unique viewpoints and problem-solving approaches that enrich the STEM fields." — Sarinah Ziziumiza, Educational Technologist
Encouraging women and girls in Southeast Asia to pursue STEM careers is vital, not just for the individuals but for the entire region. By fostering an inclusive environment where girls are encouraged to explore and excel, we can promote gender equality and address critical skill shortages, which fuels economic growth and development. Seeing women succeed in STEM can inspire future generations, providing them with role models who show that great achievements in these fields are possible.
The impact of the EdTech 10 list
The Bett Asia EdTech 10 list celebrates the achievements of women integrating tech within education, supporting their future endeavours in the industry. Sarinah Ziziumiza shared how being on the list has benefited her professionally:
"This recognition has significantly boosted my credibility and validated the years of hard work and dedication I have poured into educational technology. It has opened numerous doors for networking with other top professionals in the field, leading to fruitful collaborations and partnerships that have furthered my career."
Beyond professional perks, many winners have shared the personal impact of this recognition. Being acknowledged for their hard work and dedication has opened up opportunities for speaking engagements and advisory roles, allowing them to share their knowledge and experiences, contributing further to the EdTech community’s growth and development.
Inspiring Girls to Consider a Career in Technology
One impactful action a teacher can take is to organise hands-on learning from organisations such as Tech She Can. On a mission to make women equal contributors in the creation and development of new technology, businesses, products and services that shape our world, the charity works to ensure that technology benefits everyone. Educating and inspiring the next generation of technologists is a core objective for Tech She Can. Through their Tech We Can programme, they offer free learning materials and experiences to inspire all children, especially girls, to consider a future career in technology.
"My role at Tech She Can is to lead our team of educators who design and deliver educational resources and experiences to inspire the next generation. I joined the charity just after its inception and am incredibly proud to have played a pivotal part in helping our reach and impact grow across the UK and beyond. We have now directly reached over 120,000 children and indirectly, 400,000+ children have accessed our resources in classrooms or at home with their teachers and parents."
— Becky Patel, Head of Education and Learning at Tech She Can
