Lifelong learning for all: Pathways, possibilities, and purpose
During this keynote, Datuk Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim, Director General of the SEAMEO Secretariat and former Director-General of Education Malaysia, draws on decades of experience shaping education systems across South-East Asia to explore one of the most pressing issues in education today: lifelong learning.
Reflecting on her years in the Ministry of Education, Datuk Dr Habibah shares first-hand perspectives on the critical challenges learners face early in life, particularly those who disengage from school, those who struggle with career direction, or women who return to education after early setbacks. For many, the traditional education path does not reflect their aspirations or realities, and without intervention, the cost can be lifelong. Yet, the promise of lifelong learning is that it is never too late.
This session delves into how lifelong learning provides second chances and harmonisation between pathways. Whether through reskilling, TVET courses, micro-credentials, or adult education programmes, individuals at any stage of life can re-enter learning and discover how flexible systems can enable mobility between professional levels.
