Empowering the next generation through impact

Imagine a world where everyone is clear of their purpose and impact, and where people gravitate towards teams, groups and organisations based on a sense of common purpose. Academic institutions can and should be the starting point of this movement.

With the arrival of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where robots and artificial intelligence are getting better at doing many of the human tasks, having a clear sense of purpose is becoming even more important for us to remain productive, motivated, and relevant. As technology advances and evolves, there is a clear pattern of what it can and cannot do.

That is why at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, we decided to start a purposeful and impact-based community. We are encouraging every member of our community, staff and students, to develop an “Impact Statement” describing how they would like to impact the world beyond themselves. This will form the basis of a lifelong journey of personal growth for our students and staff.

This session will look at how to help students become more purpose-driven, resilient, emotionally intelligent and happy, as well as taking a serious look at many of our establishments and institutions, and ways to transform them to be fit for this new world.
