Rhythm for Reading is a digital group reading resource for children and young people aged 5-15 and a professional development programme for teachers. It complements traditional phonological approaches to the teaching of reading by helping readers to anticipate the development of the narrative. It improves reading by
- sharpening the perception of phonemes,
- supporting the integration of rhythmic structures of language with the mechanics of decoding and
- enabling children to extract meaning while they read and consequently enjoy reading.
This programme behaves as a catalyst for learning. In UK schools there has been an average improvement of 20 months in reading comprehension in only 10 weeks and in only ten minutes per week of curriculum time. The Rhythm for Reading Programme offers forward-facing schools a new paradigm for the teaching of reading.
